Royal Family Kids

It’s been a while since I posted, and I said last time I was going to talk about Royal Family Kids.

Royal Family Kids is a Christian organization the provides a safe place at a camp and a mentoring program for children who are abused and neglected in the foster care system. I have been volunteering for this organization for 10 years. It’s an amazing experience. This year was no different.

Every year I am involved by being a staff member. I sing in the worship team and act in the drama. Each staff person puts a cabin to bed while the counselors go to a meeting.

I love being a staff member because I get to interact with all the kids and help out where I can. My favorite thing is doing the music, drama, and putting the kids to bed. Putting the kids to bed I have a more personal relationship with the girls. I like to have books and fun activities for the girls to do while I read or listen to soft music to help them calm down. We talk about that day and what they look forward to for the next day or the week.

There was a girl in my cabin this year that told a LOT of lies. Her story changed to gain the approval of everyone else. She copied what other people did. She had a very hard time making friends. She was 10 but her mentality was of a 5-year-old. She was the sweetest girl. It broke my heart the way the other kids treated her. I know about that all too well. So, I decided to take her under my wing. I prayed for her every night and I gave her attention because I recognized that is what she was craving and what she needed.

Another favorite day that I love about camp is SPA DAY! This is what we call everybody’s birthday party. This is where the kids get to pick fancy dress up clothes. The boys get to learn how to be gentleman and wear ADORABLE suites. The girls get their toes and finger nails done, hair done, pick out a prom dress, and pick accessories to go with everything. See the kids’ faces when they look all fancy is the best thing. The girls look in the mirrors and twirl like princesses just admiring how beautiful they are; with their eyes and smiles that could light up the earth. It’s a beautiful sight.

Every year I watch these kids grow in their faith and how they let down walls, so they can feel the love that we give. They feel safe and they can be a kid again.

The saddest part is when they go home because we know the type of environment they are going too. We wish we can keep them.

After the kids have gone home all the volunteers gather together and we read these letters that the kids write. Dear God…and I love camp because… letters. Some letters are silly, and some are sad. They bring tears to all of our eyes.

Every year it’s different and every year is the most wonderful experience. I suggest you find a camp near you and volunteering. Sure, it’s exhausting but so rewarding.
